Schools auction fees defaulters’ property
Zvamaida Murwira Senior Reporter
SCHOOLS in Karoi have started auctioning property belonging to fees defaulters. This follows a High Court ruling which empowered schools to sue parents who default paying fees instead of turning away pupils.
The move is expected to have ripple effects as other schools are likely to follow suit.
It is also expected to trigger debate in the education sector as many schools have long used expulsion or exclusion of pupils as a way of enforcing payment.
In the past, schools turned away pupils who failed to pay fees and levies, but with the High Court judgment, a new strategy will have to be used in dealing with defaulters.
According to a statement published in the media yesterday, the Deputy Sheriff is expected to auction property belonging to parents from three schools together with other defaulters.
