US says China not currency manipulator; chides Japan

WASHINGTON — The US Treasury again shied away from labelling China a currency manipulator on Tuesday, but it rapped the country for not moving quickly enough on exchange rate reforms.
The United States also chided Japan for stepping into the currency market to stem the yen’s rise, and urged South Korea to use such interventions sparingly.

Iran oil threat buoys crude

LONDON  — Iran’s threat to stop the flow of oil from the Gulf supported crude prices yesterday and put world shares on the back foot, while looming Italian debt auctions hampered the euro.
Tehran said on Tuesday it would stop oil transiting through the Strait of Hormuz if sanctions were imposed on its crude exports over its nuclear ambitions, a move that could conceivably trigger military conflict with economies dependent on Gulf oil.

NY Times to sell regional newspapers

The New York Times Co said it will sell 16 regional newspapers spread across the US Southeast and California to Halifax Media Holdings for $143 million in cash as it looks to cut costs and focus on its most important papers and their websites.

Mupfurutsa died on his way to Avenues Clinic in Harare yesterday morning after a long battle with motor neurone complications resulting from injuries suffered from a road accident.
