Council overbills residents by $2,7m

THE Bulawayo City Council overcharged residents by $2,7 million in water penalties for March and April when it used estimated water meter readings, a council report has revealed.

Council’s latest finance and development report shows that consumers were overbilled and then charged penalties for exceeding the limited use based on estimated bills in March and April.

The local authority has blamed the error on a computer generated moving average.

It has also cited a penalty rate increase from $0,84 to $2,63 as a contributing factor to the subsequent abnormal bills that sparked an outcry from residents.

Gwanda share trust prioritises health sector

THE Gwanda Community Share Ownership Trust (CSOS/T) is inviting companies to supply equipment for the construction of health and irrigation facilities in the district as it moves to implement the Government indigenisation and empowerment programme.

The trust flighted an advert in the Press where it identified three clinics which need completion and two irrigation schemes that need rehabilitation.

In an interview yesterday, the chairperson of the community development fund, Chief Khulumani Mathema, said they had prioritised the health sector because the facilities in the sector needed attention.
