Companies accused of selling water to residents

Temba Dube
THE Bulawayo City Council may soon extend the water shedding from three to four days amid revelations that some companies are selling thousands of litres of treated water to residents.

This came out yesterday when four clusters from the water crisis committee namely resources mobilisation, monitoring and compliance, advocacy and information dissemination and public education gave feedback reports on the water situation.

Addressing stakeholders at the meeting in the council chambers yesterday, the city’s water engineer, Engineer Ian Mthunzi, said if residents continued using more than 95 000 cubic metres of water per day, council might be forced to increase shedding in the next two weeks.

“The reservoir levels are going down at an alarming rate. Very soon, we would be forced to pump water straight from the dams and bypass the reservoirs.  If residents fail to stick to prescribed rationing limits, shedding would have to be increased from 72 hours to 96 hours per week to ensure that the water we have lasts until the next rainy season,” said Eng Mthunzi.
