Taxi war brews

Chronicle Reporter
A NEW taxi war is brewing in Bulawayo with registered commuter omnibus operators vowing that they will block the city council from issuing unregistered taxi operators route permits.

Commuter omnibus operators have been angered by the formation of the Express Private Car Commuter Services Organisation (Expriccos), an association of unregistered taxi operators popularly known as pirate taxis.

Expriccos has intensified efforts to get legal recognition to operate in the city.

However, the move has been met with fierce resistance by registered operators, who feel the business is oversubscribed.

Expriccos chairman Mr Nsikelelo Khumalo yesterday told Chronicle that the registered commuter omnibus operators had no right to question their existence.
