GOVERNMENT has hailed concerted efforts shown by artists and the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in addressing challenges bedevilling the nation such as poverty in line with the economic blue print, Zim-Asset, Manicaland Provincial Administrator, Fungai Mbetsa has said. Speaking at visionary artist, Simbarashe Mwoyowaonda’s exhibition at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe Mutare offices last Friday, Mbetsa, said young people should emulate Simbarashe’s artistry and innovativeness in preserving African culture through art.

The versatile artist exhibited acrylic paintings of various sizes designed in unique clay pot style carrying different meanings depicting African culture and social etiquettes. “It is encouraging that young people like Simbarashe is taking pride in being African, something most young people of his age fail to do.

“We also appreciate Mwoyowaonda’s innovativeness and artistry particularly on describing locals. Your work should be a source of inspiration to most upcoming artists,” added Mbetsa.

“Let us use the multi-sectoral approach as a possible solution to some of our challenges like marketing strategies for artists, where we challenge the business community, Non Governmental Organisation, government, entrepreneurial, and civil society to work in unison to resolve problems. We therefore call for all stakeholders to use the paradigm shift in our approach to art appreciation in valuing our culture,” said Mbetsa.

The exhibition held under the theme: “Shaping Visions” was, however, marred by poor attendance.
