Donavan targets league title

CHICKEN Inn shot-stopper, Bernard Donavan, says he wants to win the league championship and the Golden Glove award will be a bonus.

The Gamecocks are the current log leaders with 32 points, at the midway point of the season.

Donavan has been crucial in the campaign with 10 clean sheets in 17 games.

“It feels great to have double figures in the number of clean sheets,” he said.

“Whenever the season starts, I set a performance benchmark for myself and the double figures are part of my performance indicators.

“However, there is still much ground to cover for myself, and the team as well, since we are in the championship race.

“Basically, the team’s goals are the most important in football, it is a team sport and we complement each other to achieve our targets.

“Personally, my primary goal is to win the championship with Chicken Inn and the rest will follow.”

Donavan says working with Energy Murambadaro has been instrumental in his development and he has improved a lot in the past few years under him.

The goalminder said their last game against Triangle was worth the celebrations after he saved a last-minute penalty, to secure maximum points, for Joey Antipas’ side.

“Gee, as we call him, has improved me a lot in the past few years.

“He has helped me read the game more and work on my technical abilities, which is something I am happy about.

“I hope to continue working with him as he brings out the best in me.

“The penalty save was something that felt amazing. It felt like it was my first penalty save.

“It was worth celebrating, you know, we needed to win and saving a last-minute penalty, to get all three points, is something good.

“Triangle are a very good side, especially at home, and winning there is a morale booster.”

He added:

“It was a tough game, which was full of controversy. They were given a dubious 89th-minute penalty.

“We got frustrated, Passmore Bernard received a red card for asking how that was a penalty.

“Fortunately, for me, I never lost my cool and I thank God I made the save.

“For me, it was my second penalty save in the dying minutes of a match. I once did that at Gibbo in 2018, when I was still at Ngezi and we also won 1-0.”
