A HARARE man yesterday told the court he was epileptic and could not afford to pay $30 000 in maintenance.
The amount is being demanded by his ex-wife for the upkeep of his minor child.
Wellington Washaya (40) said he could not afford to pay that amount and instead offered to pay $15 000.
“I do not earn much, Your Worship. My salary is $50 000 so I cannot afford $30 000,” Washaya said.
“Your worship, I want the court to consider that l have two minor children, with another wife, who I support.
“I am also epileptic and cannot afford to buy my medication.
“I also assist my parents to buy hypertension tablets.
“I can only afford $15 000, then fees, we will meet halfway,” he said.
However, his ex-wife Rumbidzai Marovha (36) said $15 000 was not enough for a child because every day she needs bus fare, to and from school.
“If he can offer $25 000, at least, it’s better,” she said.
Magistrate Sharon Mashavire ordered Mashaya to pay $20 000, and 50 percent of the child’s school fees, with effect from August 30.
