THE 2016 Manicaland cross-country championships will be held on Monday as the provincial athletics governing body – the Manicaland Athletics Board (MAB) – will be holding its season opening event in the city on Sunday.
The event will take place at Aloe Park.
MAB chairman, Joshua ‘Zesa’ Matume, confirmed that the event will go ahead as scheduled.
He said it would mark the beginning of the 2016 athletics season.
“We will have the Manicaland cross-country championships on January 31 (Sunday) and this is an event that will mark the beginning of the 2016 athletics season.
“Several talented athletes are expected to compete in the different categories.
We are all aware that this as quite an exciting event for those who love long distance running competitions,’ said Matume.
The cross country provincial championships is comprised of the junior women 6km race, junior men 8km contest, senior women 8km competition and the senior men 12km battle.
A team of winners in each category is expected to represent the province at the national cross country championships to be held in Harare on February 7 at Morris Depot.
Continental Africa Cross-Country Champs will be held Younde Cameron on 12 March 2016 and Team Zimbabwe will be chosen from those that perform well in the national competitions.
“Apart from cross-country, MAB has got quite a good number of events lined up for this year.
Track and field competitions, courses for coaches and officials including race walking are part of the provincial package,” added Matume.
