NEW: Malaria claims six lives in one week

At least six people died of malaria from 4 749 cases recorded in one week alone.

A Ministry of Health and Child Care Weekly Disease Surveillance Report for the week ending April 13, shows that Mashonaland Central province had the highest number of cases.

“4 749 malaria cases and six deaths were reported from Rushinga district (two) in Mashonaland Central province (two), Sally Mugabe Central Hospital (one) in Harare province, Mudzi district (one) in Mashonaland East province, Binga district (one) Matabeleland North province and Kwekwe district (one) in Midlands province.

“The provinces that reported the highest number of cases were Mashonaland Central province (1 838) and Mashonaland East province (913).

“The cumulative figures for malaria cases are 42 020 and 72 deaths,” reads part of the report.

Of the reported cases, 543 were under the age of five.
