BIG things are happening in the sprawling high-density suburb of Sakubva.
Every week, if not everyday, a dancehall musician is born. Just like in Mbare, one of the oldest suburbs in Harare they are taking the genre so seriously that some youths have abandoned school for the microphone.

Lady Popa, one of the most talented dancehall artistes in Sakubva is one such example.

She has become one of the most sought-after teen chanters in the suburb. She has a great future.

Her partner in the profession, Fire Lady, whose real name is Cynthia Saungweme has also taken Sakubva by storm.

She also mesmerized hundreds of revellers at the Dancehall cup clash held recently at Mutare Motoring Club. Her creativity, versatility and confidence make her the future wonder of dancehall in Mutare and beyond.

In an interview with The Weekender after her last performance at Chinyausunzi Bar in Sakubva, the 22-year-old songstress, said Winky D was her inspiration and would never quit the genre before she matches DiBigman’s lyrical ingenuity.

“Music is my passion. Winky D inspired me to take this genre seriously. Everyday is a learning curve for me and I am thankful for my fans.

“They are my major sources of strength. I am composing one song a month and most of my songs are based on personal experiences, wishes and hopes,” said the dreadlocked composer.

Saungweme’s husky-voice is one of her major and unique strengths.

So far, she has composed seven singles which are Kwatabva kure, Runhare paHarare, Ndini Fire Lady, Ndoda Mface, Musavadaro, 2014 zvakadzora and Zvawada.

“I hope to be one of the best dancehall artistes in five years time. I am learning a lot from the current crop of established lady chanters like Lady Squanda, Lady B and Lipsy,” she said.
