MUTARE-BASED Women Football League outfit, Faithdrive’s Maud Mafuruse (pictured below) has been called for national team camp ahead of the return leg of the Olympics qualifiers second round second leg to be played on Sunday in Harare.The 15-year-old striker is one of the players who were drafted into the national team by coach, Rose Mugadza, who continues to cast her net wide as she tries to build a competitive team.
Mafuruse is also the youngest player in the Mighty Warriors camp. On joining the camp, she scored a hat-trick when the Mighty Warriors played a friendly match against Relience Academy as she slowly proves that she deserves a place in the squad.
Mafuruse joined the Nelia Musikavanhu-owned side in 2011 while doing Grade Seven at Chirowakamwe Primary School and since then she has never looked back.
Mafuruse caught the attention of Mighty Warriors’ technical team after she banged in an astonishing 15 goals out of the 16 games that her team played last season.
“I am happy as I have always wanted to play for the national team. It is every player’s dream to represent the nation. I am very grateful to my coach, Admire Mahachi as he has helped me and always encouraged me to work hard. I am also grateful to Gogo Musikavanhu for nurturing us and she has helped me a lot to be where I am right now,” she said.
Faithdrive mentor, Admire Mahachi, is a happy man and wishes the young star all the best.
“I am very happy for her and I wish her all the best. She must continue working very hard as she normally does. She will go far if she maintains discipline and I see a bright future ahead of her,” he said.
Mafuruse is currently doing O-Level at Nyamauru High School in Dangamvura and she also dreams of playing abroad.
Meanwhile, Mighty Warriors suffered a 1-2 defeat at the hands of Zambia last weekend.
The Rose Mugadza-coached side found the back of the net through Rudo Neshamba, while the hosts scored through Barbara Banda and Helen Mubanga.
