Shangani gold fever quickly spreads

As many as 300 people — panners, prospectors, buyers and vendors — are still seeking instant riches at the gold claim near Shangani in Insiza District.

They are coming from places like Gokwe, Mhondoro, Masvingo and Zvishavane to the scene of the latest gold rush in mineral-rich Matabeleland South. Some are going there on foot, others by bus and others in expensive cars, hoping to strike it rich. Every beautiful car that a person might think of is on the isolated goldfield. Many of the cars are owned by those well-off enough to buy gold detecting machines.
